Five tricks to revive your abode for summer

Give your friends bedroom envy with these easy interior design tricks. Changing your décor for the seasons is perhaps more common in, say, Europe than here in New Zealand. Frankly, I love the thought of it. If you are anything like me and have a tendency to get quickly tired of the same ole’, same ole’, then this tradition gives you an excuse to swap out a few things, and, hey presto – a whole new look! It’s widely known and considered “the norm” to swap out your wardrobe with the change in season, so why not your bedroom I say!

Let’s start with lighting

If you don’t have a sexy oversized hanging pendant suspended over your bed yet then it’s simple really – get one. They add an instant glam factor to your abode and anchor your bed beautifully. Look for a pendant that gives you the option of changing the shade out so you have freedom throughout the seasons to customise a new look. Same goes for your bedside lamps, change the shade out to match your new summer scheme. Just take a look at your lighting and think about how you could modify it for summer, perhaps some faux vines wrapped around your chandelier would do the trick?

Anchor your bed

To anchor your bed successfully, you need to think about both the head and the foot of the bed. Not getting this balance right is where most go wrong. The key is having weight at the head of the bed with say a lush headboard, textured feature wall or oversized artwork and then counterbalancing this with something like a rug or bench seat at the foot of the bed.  For summer you could use a rug made from a natural breathable fibre such as sisal, and, of course, for winter, you could use a chunkier more warm fibre such as wool.

Bedding

Time to swap out that bedding for lighter breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen. Store away your fur skins, thick velvets, chunky wool throws and cushions, and bring out your box of décor goodies that has the label “Fresh New Look” written on top of it. Pull out of this box some fresh white euro covers, a draping linen bedspread and finish it off with a couple of feature cushions and a textured cotton throw and there you have it, comfortable, modern and beautiful – just like a luxury hotel bed! A sure way to achieve bedroom envy.

While you’re at it, you might as well freshen up your ensuite towels. Turkish towels are fantastic! Lightweight, highly absorbent and ideal for travel as they are compact. You can also use these as a throw, on the beach or picnics. Limon have a great new range and currently have 20% off this month! Get in touch if you’d like to order some for gifts!

Make your room multi-functional with a private seating area

If you have space in your bedroom, consider having an alfresco seating area. Selecting a style of chair that has a detachable seat squab allows you to swap the covers for the seasons. In summer, you may want to use an outdoor fabric so you can plonk your chairs outside for an arvo of vino and tapas for two. This season’s outdoor fabric collections offer a brilliant range of colours, textures and patterns.

Bedroom envy – finishing touches

Lastly, every great interior has thoughtful finishing touches. Add a bunch of summer flowers and a luxe scented candle that oozes the smell of summer such as these boutique candles by Miller Road; Lime, basil and mandarin, Fruity Fig, Sweet Pea and Jasmine, Bamboo and White Lily, Coconut Lime and, my favourite, Champagne and Strawberries! All of these candles are now stocked at our Studio, so let me know if you’d like to order any for gifts this Christmas or drop by and have a sniff!
